MGE debuted its services to convert any diesel engine to run on recycled vegetable oil, a clean waste product turned fuel alternative, at the recent Washington DC Green Festival by highlighting a system installed in a bright yellow H1 Hummer. This unusual “green solution” display showed they can convert any diesel vehicle to be a hybrid using either “Veggie” or diesel as a fuel.
“Green is ‘in’ and it is emerging rapidly in a way similar to the commercialization of the internet when the first World Wide Web browsers made it accessible to the common user.” says James Massa, co-founder of MGE, a family owned business focused on providing green solutions to the greater Washington DC. As the former Cisco Systems Chief Strategist for Global Government Solutions, James went on to say “Regardless of your politics, you have to recognize that former Vice President and, now, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Al Gore has a keen ability to see phenomenon that is have impact at a global level.” James continued. “He may not have invented the internet, but he clearly saw its forthcoming impact. He is on the same cutting edge in regards to ‘Green’. For the next decade, “Green” is the fasting phenomenon growing outside of a petri dish.”
MGE provides conversions to diesel engines by installing a system from Golden Fuel Systems, a manufacturer of conversion systems to allow diesel systems to run on plant vegetable oil. Rudolph diesel’s original compression combustion engine first ran on peanut oil. “Veggie” is a natural lubricant to the engine and has none of the processing concerns or emissions of biodiesel fuel.
“When I first started to look at alternatives to diesel fuel, I went far down the biodiesel path. However, with biodiesel you have to convert every gallon on fuel using highly flammable methonal and highly caustic lye. I just didn’t want to have those items laying around my garage.” Says Sam Massa, cofounder of MGE. He explains “With what we call Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) there are none of those concerns and you have to convert the fuel system of the vehicle only once. Grease and oil used at any restaurant to fry food is a waste product for those restaurants. They now pay to have it hauled away. I can pull up to a local fast food restaurant, talk to the manger, and fill up on virtually free Veggie. When I leave the manager is thrilled that I also ‘took out the trash’.”
MGE recognizes that not all drivers want to be gathering their own veggie oil. For the greater Washington DC, VA, and MD area MGE provides a delivery service for Veggie oil to one’s home. They also point out that the vehicles which are converted to run on Veggie can still run on diesel or biodiesel, essentially making the vehicle a hybrid. Sam Massa explains, “At any time you can with the flip of a switch continue to have the convenience (and the expense) of diesel. However, if you want to run on Veggie at a 95% fuel cost savings, you can do that as well. Even Myth Busters demonstrated that the performance and the miles per gallon are the same.”
“Everyone asks me ‘Do you think Veggie is THE solution to eliminate the US’ dependence on foreign oil?” indicates Charles Anderson, founder of Golden Fuel Systems of Springfield, MO. “I always say it is part of the solution. Electric hybrids are part of the solution. Biodiesel is part of the solution. However, the one solution I know which uses no foreign oil, has very low negative emissions, and is the only fuel consumed by humans every day, is straight vegetable oil.”
